Here are a few details about the Inn.
Secluded in the middle of 42 densely wooded acres in Summerville is one of the most luxurious and highly acclaimed retreats in the world. As one of only four resorts in North America to be honored with the prestigious Forbes Five-Star, the Woodlands Inn has captured the attention of a number of tough critics and authorities in hospitality and tourism. Among its many prestigious accolades, the Woodland Inn has been honored with a AAA Five Diamond rating for both lodging and dining; recognized by travel authority Andrew Harper as one of the top 20 hideaways in America; and ranked “No. 1” in service and “Best Value” of any Five Star and Five Diamond hotel in the country.
The inn's reputation as a luxury destination began more than a century ago, when the stately mansion was built as a winter retreat for a wealthy railroad family to relax and recharge. Because of its elevation from the coast, Summerville was sought out by settlers and Southern planters as a respite from the coastal heat and the threat of malaria. In 1888, a group of physicians put Summerville on the map during an International Congress of Physicians in Paris. The group declared that Summerville's climate was best suited for those with pulmonary disorders and for maintaining optimum health. In an instant, Summerville was branded as a destination for health and wellness and a place where the Northern elite relocated during winter months
