Pink Lotus

I am an avid gardener and most of the floral paintings that I do are inspired from my own garden, however this lotus was in a friends pond. I took several photos of their beautiful waterlilies and lotus blooms while I was visiting. I chose to paint this one because I liked the way the lotus has already been opened for a couple of days and the petals are about to fall off, revealling the decorative seed pod. This is a 5"x 5" oil on hard board.

Yellow Bell Pepper

I chose a very dark background to show off this brightly colored pepper. I also enjoyed painting the reflection of the pepper in the surface of the wood table. The highlight is from the sunlight of my studio window. We had Thai food tonight and I used this pepper in a stir fry! This is a 6"x6" oil on hard board.

Eggplant

This 6"x6" still life oil painting on hard board was painted from life in one sitting. I enjoy working from live objects because I find that my painting becomes more deliberate as I try capture the subject before it begins to change. Luckily eggplant is a durable vegetable and I had alot more time than I did when painting a recent still life with cut lemons and peels! I really liked the glossy sheen of the purple skin and the way the warm light is reflected up onto the eggplant. I guess Eggplant Parmesan will be on the menu this week!

Tomato

I like to paint subjects that are red. I find that the colors come out more vibrant if I use them straight out of the tube and mix them directly on the painting. I usually prefer a darker background, however, I felt the tomato really pops against the lighter color. The highlight on the tomato is from the natural light coming from my studio window. This is a 6"x6" oil on hard board.

Red Onion

This is a 6"x6" oil painting on hard board. Unlike my wildlife subjects where I use photographs for references, this still life is painted from life. I have enjoyed shopping for subjects to paint in the produce section of the local grocery stores. I chose this onion because of all the wonderful roots and the beautiful color of the skin.

Male Peacock

I really enjoy painting birds. Peacocks are often on the historical plantations found locally and I enjoy watching them strut around and preen their beautifully colored tails. The irridesence in the feathers is a challenge that I enjoy trying to recreate on canvas. This painting is a 6"x6" oil on canvas. "SOLD"

Black Capped Chickadee

This chickadee is a frequent visitor to the feeders in my yard. This summer I also was fortunate to have them nest in one of my bird houses. I was planting some flowers around the the base of the bird house and they continued their nest building activity unafraid of my presence. If you are interested in bird watching check out my link to the Roger Tory Peterson Institute. This is a 6"x6" oil on canvas on board. SOLD

Male Lion Portrait

This is a subject that I paint quite often, although usually on a much larger scale. I have always been in awe of the beauty and power of large cats. This lion I photographed face to face with no cage or bars between us. It is definitely a different experience than photographing a lion in a zoo. SOLD

Rusted Barn Door Handle

This is the other handle on the barn doors. I love how it doesn't match the red one from my previous post. Not only is the color different but, the shape of the handles as well. The texture of the weathered wood, peeling paint, and rusted metal were alot of fun to paint. This is a 6"x6" oil on canvas mounted on hard board. For purchase information please email me at wileyart@bellsouth .net

Red Barn Door Handle

I grew up in Western New York on a horse farm. The landscape was full of all these one of a kind buildings. Each one was as unique as a fingerprint. Over the years the barns have dissapperred and what was once farmland has been sold off to developers. The few remaining barns are no longer being used and are slowly being reclaimed by the elements. This door handle is one of two(watch for it's pair) on an old barn that still stands in Gasport, New York. I love to see the effects of the harsh weather on the paint. What was once a pristine white paint on the door is now only remaining in a few patches. The handle itself was once a bright red but now rusted metal shows through where years of use have rubbed the paint off. This is a 6"x6" oil on canvas. For purchase information please email me at wileyart@bellsouth.net.

Onion

The color and texture of this onion was fun to paint. I really liked trying to capture the flaws in the skin and the transparent quality of the peel. This is an oil on canvas mounted on hardboard in a 6"x6" size. I liked painting on the slightly larger size. It gives me a little more room to make painterly brush strokes.
